The action aims to strengthening the resilience of rural households living in extreme poverty through the creation of a social protection system able to give autonomy to most vulnerable groups.

Description
The regions of the country involved in the project are characterized by a high degree of food insecurity. During periods between crop rural people, are forced to adopt negative survival strategies in order to hack it the insufficient production levels; these include indebtedness, animal sales, migration of young people towards cities (or other countries) and the abandonment of the fields to go to work as day laborer at large landowners. This situation reflects on the nutritional status of the population. According to SMART data (December 2016), the rate of global and chronic malnutrition in North and Sahel Provinces is higher than the national averages. In these two areas, less than 15% of children between 6-23 months have access to a diversified and minimally acceptable nutrition; 42.2% of households are poor and 34.9% are extremely poor. The other major vulnerability factors are: limited access to drinking water and basic sanitation (less than 50% and 10% respectively); the deterioration of the environment caused by demographic pressure and the effects of climate change, the presence of displaced persons from northern Mali (28.800 people are in the Sahel) and the infiltration of Malian jihadist groups that make local balances even more delicate. The project therefore aims to respond to this situation and is part of the Global Resilience Alliance (AGIR) established by the Burkina Faso government which, through coordinated action by 9 International NGOs, promotes the LRRD strategy by guaranteeing a gradual transition from an Emergency approach to development.
Objectives

General Objective: contribute to strengthening the resilience of vulnerable communities with respect to food and nutrition, in the Sahel and North regions.

Specific Objectives:

  • Improving access of the population to basic social services;
  • Restoring and strengthening the livelihoods of the most vulnerable families for the development of farming and small breeding, in order to improve the food production and the economic security;
  • Promoting exchanges between civil society, vulnerable populations and local authorities to foster dialogue and good practices with a view to strengthening good governance of food security.
Activities
  •  Training and awareness on the Hygiene and on ANJE - Neonatal and Infant Food - for beneficiaries;
  • Education and awareness raising on maternal-infant health and on sexual and reproductive health services;
  • Construction and rehabilitation of wells and latrines;
  • Money transfers and assistance through food vouchers;
  • Requalification of land portions;
  • Support to horticulture chains and strengthening of family-generating activities outside the farms;
  • Strengthening the technical and institutional capabilities of the Municipalities;
  • Promoting a structured dialogue between municipal authorities and populations.
