In Burundi, poverty and socio-economic instability are among the causes of food insecurity. These factors are responsible for severe malnutrion, which contributes to around 45% of child mortality and of delays in the psychophysical growth of more than one million children under the age of five.
The project aims to reduce malnutrition among the vulnerable population, mainly children under five years of age as well as pregrant and breastfeedign women. The targeted population have access to FARNs, programmes implemented at community level for the rehabilitation of undernourished children and to increase the competences of women on nutrition and promotion of good practices. Furthermore, thanks to the medical staff, children receive medical examinations and the entire community is involved in awareness campaigns for hygiene promotion. Lastly, women are involved in microcredit initiatives to encourage them to generate revenues that can contribute to achieving food security for their families.
