The local Lebanese communities are severely worn out by the large number of Syrians refugees, a number that has led to the collapse of local health services: this situation is obviously a source of strong social tensions, as well as problematic on the practical and health side. The action aims to ensure sanitation access to both the hosting Lebanese community and the Syrian refugees, thus contributing to a detente in relations between the two communities. We deal to build two new boreholes in the municipalities of Zabboud and Bejjeje-Jabboule, to restore the reservoir functionality in the town of Al Ain and build a new one in the village of Bejjeje- Jabboule, as well as to proceed with the renovation of the old water network Zabboud. The project also focuses on improving technical skills and water resources management of the local authorities, and on a massive campaign to raise users' awareness about the importance of a sustainable approach to water services.

The specific Objective of the intervention is to improve access to water facilities through the construction of water supply infrastructures, and to develop managerial capacities and knowledge of local users in the North Bekaa Valley. The improvement of public services will contribute to mitigate the arising conflicts between refugee and host Lebanese communities.

The second main objective of this action is to increase the technical capacity of local authorities and enhance the awareness of local Lebanese and refugee populations regarding public services, environment and WASH systems.

  • Implementation of the geo-physical  investigation in Zabboud and Bejjeje-Jabboule villages;
  • Implementation of infrastructural works: rehabilitation of Al Ain reservoir and construction of a new reservoir in Bejjeje-  Jabboule; construction of borehole in Zabboud; construction of borehole in Bejjeje-Jabboule; rehabilitation and extension of the old water network in Zabboud.
  • Carrying out a Baseline survey at household level.
  • Carrying out a massive awareness campaign.
  • Contacting and meeting with relevant stakeholders and bibliographic data collection.
  • Carrying out capacity building activities.
