The project aims to improve the care system of the elderly and to integrate the young with intellectual disabilities in the Old Town of Havana. This action will strengthen the already active services promoting sustainable mechanisms and a new management approach based on innovative Italian models particularly those of the social cooperation of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. In the past years the OHCH (Oficina del Historiador de Ciudad Habana) managed to recover buildings, most in need of rehabilitation, in the Old Town. These buildings are destined to host actions of social protection for the most vulnerable groups, opening help centres based on principles such as equity, social sustainability and attention to vulnerable groups, promoting citizen participation. This system, which is deeply dependent on the State, is facing the challenge of becoming sustainable despite the growing number of elderly people, introducing a different management approach (federal and non-federal) including operators (mainly women), relatives, public institutions and civil society organisations.

General:  Contributing to the full integration of vulnerable categories of the urban population, with a social economy perspective through the involvement of families and civil society.

Specific: Promoting the innovation of models of care for the elderly and the social and economic integration of young people with intellectual disability in Old Havana. Strengthening the planning capacity, management and economic sustainability of the support services.

  • Consultation with institutions for the creation of areas of community participation and planning.
  • Organisation of a technical mission of an Italian expert for the definition of the management plan of help centres.
  • Implementation of a management plan for the Centro Nuestra Señora de Belen. The plan should enhance the role of women as carers, promoting the inclusion of the community.
  • Training of relatives and operators on dependency syndrome and care methods for the person.
  • Mapping economic inclusion programmes for young people with intellectual disabilities.
  • Planning and implementing a training program for young people, relatives and elderly people.
  • Adaptation to standards for the educational areas and purchase of equipment and materials for the seminars.
  • Organisation of seminars for an inter-generational encounter between elderly and young people.
  • Analysis of potential educational integration for the young people involved.
